Toxic Exposures

Chronic exposure is continuous or repeated contact with a toxic substance over a long period of time (months or years). If a chemical is used every day on the job, the exposure would be chronic. Over time, some chemicals can build up in the body and cause long-term health effects.

Psychiatric Disabilities

Veterans seeking service connection for psychiatric disorders or increased ratings for these disorders are perhaps the most disadvantaged claimants in the VA system.  These Veterans must contend with the VA’s maze-like bureaucracy and with their own emotional impairments. Added to these difficulties is the problem of proving psychiatric disabilities. While most physical disabilities can be easily diagnosed and evaluated, psychiatric disabilities are often difficult to diagnose, and even more difficult to evaluate.

Neurological Disorders

Neurological disorders are diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system. In other words, the brain, spinal cord, cranial nerves, peripheral nerves, nerve roots, autonomic nervous system, neuromuscular junction, and muscles. These disorders include epilepsy, Alzheimer disease and other dementias, cerebrovascular diseases including stroke, migraine and other headache disorders, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, neuroinfections, brain tumours, traumatic disorders of the nervous system due to head trauma, and neurological disorders as a result of malnutrition.
